As a Party member, you will help to choose our next leader. It will shape the future of our Party – and our country.

Below are a selection of frequently asked questions about the process.

How does the Party choose a new leader?

Nominations for leadership candidates closed on Tuesday 12th of July. Conservative Members of Parliament will now vote for who they want to lead our Party. After each ballot, candidates will be eliminated until we’re left with two. Once this process is finished, the final two candidates will go to a vote – decided by Party members.

When is the vote?

The Party member ballot will close at 5pm on Friday 2nd September. Ballots received after that time will not be counted. The winner will be announced on Monday 5th September. That winner will become Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister.

Who can vote?

Party members who have been members for at least three months immediately prior to the close of the ballot shall be entitled to vote. This means only current members who joined on or before 3rd June 2022 will receive a ballot.

What are hustings and when are they?

The final two leadership candidates will travel around the UK and make their pitch to members. Members will be able to ask questions of both candidates during the hustings. We’ll hold several hustings across the country (and streamed online), details of which will be advertised shortly on this website.

How do I vote in the ballot?

Qualifying members will be sent a ballot by post to their registered membership address.

When will I receive my ballot?

Timing details will be available shortly after the final two candidates are confirmed.

Can I join now and receive a vote?

No. Only current members who joined on or before 3rd June 2022 will receive a ballot. On the three-month anniversary of joining the Party you will be entitled to vote in any future Party election.

Can I vote if my membership is less than 3 months old on the day the ballot closes?

No. You will not qualify to receive a ballot and not be able to vote.

Can I vote if my membership is expired, suspended or cancelled?

No. You will not qualify to receive a ballot and not be able to vote.

Will I need a membership card to vote or attend a husting?

No. Membership cards or membership certificates are not required to vote in this or other Party elections nor to attend a husting. Membership cards are no longer produced for Party members.

How do I find my membership number?

Your membership number is displayed on your membership certificate sent at time of joining or renewing. We will also include it in many of the emails we send you.

If I’m a member of more than one association, do I get more than one vote?

No. The ballot will operate on the basis of ‘one member one vote’ and those members with additional memberships will not receive multiple ballots.

How can I contact the Membership team?

Please contact leadership@conservatives.com. Please note, we expect a high volume of contacts – we will answer queries strictly in the order received. We ask you not to send chaser emails as this will hinder our ability to respond to all queries in a timely manner.
